About Maasai Mara National Reserve

Maasai Mara National Reserve safari guide

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s most internationally recognised safari landscape: sweeping grasslands, river systems, big cats, elephants and vast herds moving through an ecosystem that connects directly with Tanzania’s Serengeti. The official reserve describes the Mara as a 1,510-square-kilometre protected area and a cornerstone of Kenya’s natural and cultural heritage.

The reserve is famous for the Great Migration, when wildebeest, zebra and other grazers move through the wider Mara–Serengeti ecosystem in search of pasture and water. Migration timing is driven by rainfall and natural conditions, so no responsible operator can guarantee a particular river crossing on a specific day. The Mara is nevertheless rewarding throughout the year because its resident wildlife does not disappear when the migration herds move on.

Wildlife and safari experiences

The Maasai Mara supports the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo—alongside cheetahs, giraffes, hyenas, antelope and a rich variety of birdlife. Its open terrain is particularly well suited to observing predator behaviour and photographing wildlife against broad horizons. Depending on the itinerary and operating area, a Mara journey can also include balloon safaris, cultural experiences and time in neighbouring conservancies.

For a classic first safari, combine the Mara with Amboseli National Park for a strong contrast between predator-rich plains and Kilimanjaro-backed elephant country. Travellers arriving through Nairobi can begin with Nairobi National Park before moving on to the Mara. Explore our Kenya safari itineraries for route ideas and our safari experiences for themes such as migration travel, photography, family safaris and honeymoons.

When to visit the Maasai Mara

The reserve can be visited year-round. July to October is commonly associated with the migration season in the Mara, but exact herd locations and river activity change from year to year. Outside the busiest migration months, travellers can benefit from different landscapes, fewer vehicles in some areas and excellent resident game viewing. The right period therefore depends on whether your priority is migration activity, photography, value, privacy or a broader Kenya circuit.

Where to stay

Accommodation ranges from established lodges to intimate tented camps in and around the reserve and neighbouring conservancies. Location affects transfer time, access to particular areas and the character of the safari, so it should be chosen as part of the itinerary rather than in isolation. Browse our safari accommodation collection and read our First Time in Kenya guide before finalising the route.
