About Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha safari and travel guide

Lake Naivasha is one of the most accessible and rewarding freshwater landscapes in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Set northwest of Nairobi, the lake provides a complete change of pace from vehicle-based game drives: open water, papyrus-fringed shores, acacia woodland, hippos, waterbirds and relaxed lakeside accommodation create a softer, more immersive stage within a Kenya safari.

The lake is internationally recognised as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. It was designated on 10 April 1995 as Ramsar Site No. 724. The current Ramsar record covers approximately 30,000 hectares and identifies Lake Naivasha as an important freshwater wetland in the Rift Valley ecosystem.

Lake Naivasha fits naturally into Euclea itineraries travelling between Nairobi, Lake Nakuru National Park and the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It is also the most practical base for combining a lake experience with Hell’s Gate National Park.

Hippos, birds and boat safaris

Hippos are one of the lake’s signature species, while the surrounding wetland supports an exceptional bird community. Ramsar information records more than 80 waterfowl species and more than 400 bird species in the wider lake environment. Guided boat trips provide opportunities to observe hippos and birds while enjoying the Rift Valley scenery.

Crescent Island and Hell’s Gate

Crescent Island walking experiences can be added when included in the confirmed itinerary. Nearby Hell’s Gate National Park adds cycling, hiking and volcanic scenery, making Naivasha one of Kenya’s strongest active-safari stops.
